How much does a .NET developer cost in the UK?

Back to Blogs

Quick answer: For mid-level to senior .NET developers in 2026, salaries typically range from £40,000 to £70,000 in the North and £55,000 to £95,000 in London, depending on seniority, technical skills and role scope. See the regional breakdown below. Architects and development managers cost up to £137,000 in London. Add employer National Insurance, pension and benefits on top.

Why are .NET developers in demand?

.NET runs a huge amount of UK business software. Banks, insurers, fintechs, healthtech firms, retailers and the public sector all have large C# and .NET estates, and many of the companies Avanti works with are moving them to the cloud, usually Azure. That creates steady demand for developers who can maintain what's there and build what comes next.

The tricky part is that not all .NET experience is the same. The wider tech market has more candidates than it did a few years ago, and less pressure on pay. Plenty of developers are available, and plenty have spent years on older .NET Framework systems. Far fewer have strong experience with modern .NET, cloud platforms and event-driven systems. Those are the people everyone is trying to hire.

What does a .NET developer cost in 2026?

These are Avanti's 2026 salary ranges for .NET developers.

.NET developer salaries by region:

Architects and development managers:

London developers cost about £15,000 to £20,000 more than in the Midlands & East, and the gap widens at senior level. That premium is shrinking: London pay fell 4% this year while Midlands & East rose 6%. If your team can work hybrid or remotely, hiring outside London is one of the easiest ways to control cost.

What pushes a .NET developer's salary up?

The top of each band goes to developers with skills in short supply:

•    Cloud experience, particularly Azure, and building systems that scale
•    Event-driven systems using tools such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
•    Authentication and security
•    CI/CD and DevOps practices, so they can ship their own code safely
•    Practical use of AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude in their day-to-day work

In Avanti's experience, full-stack developers who are also strong in React or Angular sit at the higher end too, because they can take a feature from database to screen on their own.

What does a hire cost beyond salary?

Salary is only part of the bill. Employer National Insurance is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year, and you'll pay pension contributions on top. If your business is eligible for Employment Allowance, you can claim up to £10,500 a year off that National Insurance bill, which makes a real difference for a small team making its first few hires.

A competitive package in 2026 typically includes:

•    An annual bonus
•    25 days holiday plus bank holidays
•    A pension contribution of at least 5% (the legal minimum for employers is 3%)
•    Private healthcare
•    Life insurance, often at four times salary
•    Flexible or hybrid working

Most roles are based on a 37.5 hour week.

If your package falls short, expect to pay more in base salary to make up the difference, or lose candidates at offer stage. Reed's survey of 5,000 UK professionals found people expect a pay rise of around £12,000 to move jobs, so a thin offer won't get someone to leave a role they're settled in.

What should you check before you hire?

•    Which version of .NET have they actually worked in? Years on legacy .NET Framework aren't the same as recent experience with modern .NET.
•    Have they deployed and run systems in the cloud, or only written code that someone else deploys?
•    Can they explain a technical decision they made and why? Good developers can talk through trade-offs in plain English.
•    Do they understand the product and the user, or just the ticket in front of them?

Hiring .NET developers with Avanti

Avanti has recruited software engineers across the UK since 2009, and can tell legacy from modern .NET experience before a CV reaches you. For one or two important hires, a Recruitment Partnership works on a success-fee basis. If you're hiring several developers over a set period, Multi-Hire Recruitment puts the whole requirement with one partner.

The short version

•    Mid-level .NET developer salaries typically range from £40,000 to £75,000, depending on region.
•    Senior .NET developers typically earn £55,000 to £95,000, with London at the top end.
•    Modern .NET and cloud skills push pay to the top of the band.
•    Add National Insurance, pension and benefits to get the real cost of the hire.
